PAST AND PRESENT
Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana is a program hosted by the Brain Injury Association of Louisiana and the Louisiana Chapter of the United Spinal Association.
Our Mission: Here at the Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana Program, we are determined to make an impact. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for women of achievement, who utilize wheelchairs, to successfully educate and advocate for individuals with disabilities.
Our mother foundation, Ms. Wheelchair America, was organized in 1972 by a Columbus, Ohio physician Dr. Philip K. Wood. This competition was developed as a forum for the promotion of the achievements and needs of people with mobility impairments.
Ms. Wheelchair America recognizes the accomplishments of women who utilize wheelchairs for mobility. This non-profit program which consists of the State Coordinators and State Titleholders, has grown to include programs in more than 35 states and the District of Columbia.
Louisiana became a part of the Ms. Wheelchair America organization in the 1980s as a state competition. It quickly became a yearly tradition that continues to uplift women of achievement.
Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana is staffed and coordinated by volunteers who are dedicated to increasing public awareness for individuals with disabilities. We promote advocacy, education, and empowerment so that all citizens will be afforded the opportunities to lead productive and meaningful lives.
